History

Sunthorn Phu or Phra Sunthornwoharn, the great poet of Rattanakosin, had lived a very dramatic and colourful life. At a time, he was ordained as a monk for 15 years and had spent 3 years in Wat Thethidaram. His Kuti (residence) was part of the 7th Group in Sangkhawas (Monks’ private Zone) that still exists nowadays. The Group is a U-shaped brick structure surrounding a middle courtryard. The architecture is Thai-Chinese style, with a western style gateway. The building comprises 4-5 rooms; the room on the left hand side of the gateway was where Sunthron Phu once lived.

In 1839, the construction of Wat Thethidarm was completed thus Pincess Krommamuen Apsonsudathep invited Phu, the monk who had stayed at Wat Ratchaburana since 1827, to move to this temple where he stayed at Wat Ratchaburana since 1827, to move to this temple where he stayed until 1842 when he left monkhood at the age of 56. It is believable that he composed many of his works doring his stay at Wat Thepthidaram.

Sunthron Phu residence, therefore, has been conserved in his honour. At present, it is called “Wannasinsamoson” (Literature Club) where his bust and exhibitions of his life and works are presented.
