ประวัติ
หอพระไตรปิฎก วัดทุ่งศรีเมือง อันนับอายุยืนยาวกว่าร้อยห้าสิบปีหลังนี้ เป็นสถาปัตยกรรมไม้สักทั้งหลังตั้งอยู่กลางสระน้ำ ผังอาคารเป็นรูปสี่เหลี่ยมผืนผ้า หันหน้าทางทิศตะวันออก ด้านหน้ามีสะพานไม้ทอดสู่ฝั่งลักษณะเด่นคือการผสมผสานศิลปะไทยภาคกลางและล้านช้าง กล่าวคือ เครื่องลำยองเป็นแบบไทยภาคกลาง ส่วนรูปทรงอาคารและหลังคาซ้อนชั้นแบบล้านช้าง อาคารนี้มีการตกแต่งที่วิจิตรทั้งลายรดน้ำ ไม้แกะสลักลงรักปิดทองและไม้แกะสลักแบบพื้นบ้านอีสาน ในด้านเทคนิคการก่อสร้างก็เป็นแบบโบราณ คือเข้าไม้ด้วยสลักเดือยทั้งสิ้น
วัดทุ่งศรีเมืองนี้ ก่อตั้งขึ้นเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2385 ในรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระนั่งเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว โดยเจ้าคุณพระอริยวงศาจารย์ญานวิมลอุบลสังฆปาโมกข์ (สุ่ย หลักคำ) ซึ่งเดิมเป็นพระภิกษุจากวัดสระเกศราชวรมหาวิหาร กรุงเทพมหานคร ต่อมาได้เป็นเจ้าคณะจังหวัดอุบลราชธานี ท่านได้เคยมาเจริญวิปัสสนากรรมฐาน ณ บริเวณชายทุ่งศรีเมืองนี้ และได้จำลองรอยพระพุทธบาทมาจากวัดสระเกศ จนมีศิษยานุศิษย์ติดตามมาปฏิบัติธรรมและประชาชนมาสักการะบูชารอยพระพุทธบาทจำลองมากขึ้น ท่านจึงได้ก่อตั้งวัด และให้ชื่อว่า “วัดทุ่งศรีเมือง”
ในปีเดียวกันนั้น ท่านเจ้าคุณพระอริยวงศาฯ และญาคูช่าง พระภิกษุชาวเวียงจันทน์ ได้ร่วมกันดำเนินการก่อสร้างหอไตรขึ้น ณ กลางสระน้ำ หอไตรหลังนี้มีคุณค่าโดดเด่นจนถือเป็นหนึ่งในสามของดีเมืองอุบล ดังที่กล่าวขวัญกันว่า “พระบฎวัดกลาง พระบางวัดใต้ หอไตรวัดทุ่ง” ที่ชาวอุบลยึดถือสืบกันมาและได้รับการขึ้นทะเบียนโบราณสถานโดยกรมศิลปากร เมื่อวันที่ 30 มิถุนายน 2524 ตัวอาคารและภูมิทัศน์ได้รับการบูรณะ ปรับปรุงและดูแลมาอย่างต่อเนื่อง โดยพยายามอนุรักษ์ความเป็นของแท้ดั้งเดิมไว้ให้มากที่สุด

History
Ho Phra Traipidok, or Scriptures Hall, at Wat Thung Si Mueang is a structure built entirely of
teak which dates back over 150 years. It is rectangular-planned. Its distinguished characteristic is
a combination of Central Thai and Lan Chang style, that is, the roof ornaments are Central Thai
style whereas architecturesal form and overall roof style belong to Lan Chang school. The hall is
elaborately decorated with washed glided lacquer, gilded woodcarvings, and local style
woodcarvings. The construction technique is also ancient such as the application of wood
dowelling, which is very rare nowadays.
Wat Thung Si Mueang was founded in 1842 AD., the reign of King Rama II. The founder was
Phra Ariyawongsachanyanawimol Ubolsanghapamok (Sui Lakkham) who formerly resided at Wat
Sa Ket in Bangkok. He used to make pilgrimage to Ubon Ratchathani and practiced meditation at
Thung Si Mueang. At that time, he brought along a replica of the Buddha’s Footprint from Wat Sa
Ket therefore, people came to worship the footprint as well as to join him in meditation. He then
founded a temple at the site and called it Wat Thung Si Mueangé.
In the year of establishment, Phra Ariyawongsachanyanawimol and Yakhu Chang, a mong
from Vientien, Laos, began the construction of a scriptures hall, which has become one of the
most famous treasures of Ubon Ratchathani, and has been registered as a National Monument on
30th June, 1981. The building and landscape have been well-conserved and maintained until
today.
